DNS TXT Records

DNS TXT records allow for textual information to be stored in DNS.

E.g.
Here we can see the TXT records for example.com:

% dig example.com txt +short
"v=spf1 -all"
"8j5nfqld20zpcyr8xjw0ydcfq9rk8hgm"
%

We can see some Sender Policy Framework (SPF) information related to email and some sort of code of unknown use.

TXT records are used for a variety of purposes. Certificate of Authority companies for example can request a customer add a TXT record with a particular code to show proof of ownership of the domain. SPF TXT records as seen above can help protect against spam.
